THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA continues to make history!

Friday, October 31 marked the first time that any music from PHANTOM has ever been performed at the actual Paris Opera House. As part of a special Halloween broadcast on the CBS national morning show THE EARLY SHOW, two of the stars of the London production, Gina Beck (‘Christine’) and Simon Bailey (‘Raoul’), flew into Paris to perform the Opera House debut of “All I Ask of You.” The number was performed in full costume on the exquisite Grand Staircase of the lavish Grand Foyer, immortalized in the Act Two opener “Masquerade.”

The performance was part of a larger trans-continental spotlight on the musical, which also featured Broadway leading man Howard McGillin in New York performing “The Music of the Night” – also in full costume – on the outdoor CBS Plaza.

The entire 2-hour broadcast featured CBS EARLY SHOW host Julie Chen reporting live from the Paris Opera House. She reported on several stories on Paris from arts to culinary, including a special behind-the-scenes history of the very building where the action for PHANTOM is centered. Back in New York, the broadcast was hosted by CBS anchor Harry Smith. The New York segments also featured special teasers with members of the Ensemble dressed in full “Masquerade” regalia for the holiday.

In the works since September, the appearances combined the resources of the New York and London bureaus of CBS, the Paris Opera House and both the New York and London productions of PHANTOM. The two-hour broadcast represented the largest TV promotion ever aired in connection with the 20+ year run of the Broadway production. The musical, which recently celebrated its 22nd Anniversary in London, will celebrate its 21st Anniversary in New York this coming January.
